We love getting a glimpse of our family over the years with annual family photos. It’s crazy how much our kids (and ourselves) change in just one year. One of the hardest parts though can be deciding what your family should wear. You want to look intentional with the outfits either with colors, patterns, or both, but finding the perfect outfits can be time consuming.
That’s why we’re SO excited to give you some family photo outfit inspiration today to help you make a quick and gorgeous choice in what your family should wear this year. Each set includes options for everyone in the family so you can shop one time and be done. Let’s get to it!

Before we get into our favorite outfit ideas (that you can actually purchase today), we wanted to discuss some tips for when you’re doing the searching.
Set a Color Palette First
When you are trying to create the perfect outfit set for your family, stick to only 2 or 3 main colors alongside 1 or 2 neutral colors to anchor the whole look together. Depending on what time of year you are taking your photos (i.e. Fall, Spring, or Summer), choosing colors that complement the outdoor backdrop is key.
However, colors like soft earth tones, muted blues, creams, and blush palettes really work any time of the year. We definitely suggest avoiding anything too bright, like neon colors, or really big prints that can distract in a photo. We like to keep the patterns on one or two members of the family (i.e. dad and son) and play off the solid colors for the other members of the family
Dress for the Setting
Obviously, depending on if you are doing your family photos inside or outside, you definitely want to mirror the vibe of the backdrop. For instance, if you are taking photos inside in a studio, layering is always a great option and more structured clothing items that are more fitted and have more defined lines.
If you’re session is outside, you can go more flowy with lighter fabrics, but we always love bringing a bit of the season, whether it be a cardigan for fall or a light scarf for spring. Whatever you choose, just make sure you are comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. The last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable while someone takes your picture. And, whatever you do, make sure you avoid any cartoon characters for the kid’s clothes… it will make your photo very odd 😂.
Accessorize Lightly
Last, but not least, when it comes to accessorizing your outfit, stick with simple jewelry and distraction-free hair items, such as a headband. Definitely avoid chunky scarfs that might swallow your neck up or big hats that might put shadows on your face. And, when it comes to shoes, you never know if they’ll make it in the photo, so it’s always good practice to coordinate the shoes with the overall color palette.
