Start with a Theme That Feels Personal
We swear, sometimes it’s WAY too easy to get caught up in the elaborate party throwing ideas that are floating all around the internet. We get it. Some people truly love throwing awesome parties. But some of us, ahem *cough, cough*, really just want it to be fun, easy, and enjoyable for not only the guests, but ourselves too.
That’s why we think it’s important to pick a theme that makes sense for your own graduate. You could go with school colors or even something your grad is truly interested in, like a favorite sport, hobby, or even their future career.
It doesn’t have to be totally crazy, but picking a theme can make decorating a lot easier to narrow down. The small details can make it feel more special and personal while not giving you a headache in the process.
Food That Feeds a Crowd (Without the Catering Bill)
Truth be told, if you have the funds to do it, catering is a great way to feed a crowd. However, feeding guests is usually one of the most expensive parts of any party.
So if you’re looking to cut down on cost, we’ve seen some really cool options. For instance, you could easily do a DIY food bar with something like a taco bar, nacho stations, pasta bowls, or even a baked potato bar. This kind of food system can let guests customize their own plates and keep things simple for you.
If you’re looking to keep the food portion light, you can opt for finger foods and snacks that can be prepped ahead, like sliders, veggie cups, fruit kabobs, and/or mini desserts.
When it comes to the drinks, rather than spending a small fortune on individual items, you could save a buck by doing a big-batch lemonade or punch in drink dispensers to save you time and money and make the tables look super cute.
Use Photos for Decor
I’m not crying, your crying… but seriously, the though of graduation breaks our mom hearts a little. It’s so amazing and wonderful milestone, but it’s another step towards adulthood and WE’RE NOT READY!
However, the best way to get through it is to focus on the nostalgia with the amazing memories they have and other milestones they’ve reached along the way. We came across the idea to print a mix of childhood pictures, school memories, and recent photos to create a memory wall or timeline.
You can hang them with string and mini clothespins or clip them to a photo board where guests can add messages. Another fun idea is to, use a few prints to personalize the party favors or centerpiece decorations.
The beauty is it’s affordable, but also feels meaningful, which is kind of the whole point of the celebration anyway, right?
Outdoor Space? Take the Party Outside
If the weather’s in your favor, hosting outdoors can save you big on venue costs. You can use your backyard, a local park, or even your driveway. All you really need are som picnic tables, folding chairs, and maybe even some string lights to create a cozy and casual vibe.
We like to break out the lawn games, like giant Jenga, cornhole, and ring toss. You could even create a simple photo booth setup with props, and a Bluetooth speaker for background music.
Create a Grad Station
One cute idea that doubles as practical is a “Grad Station.” This is a little setup where guests can leave advice cards, sign a guestbook, and maybe even drop off cards or small gifts.
This is a great way to create something for your grad to take with them. The table can be kept simple with a few decorations, maybe a framed photo, a box for cards, and a small sign asking guests to share a message or memory. It’s an easy way to create keepsakes from the day, and your grad will love flipping through the advice later on.
Keep It Short and Sweet
Remember, there’s no rule saying your grad party has to last five hours. We liked the advice to keep it to a 2-3 hour open house style party. That way people can come and go as they please, wish your grad congratulations, grab some food and be good to go. The beauty of an open house is that it saves you from overplanning and gives everyone, including you, a chance to enjoy the moment instead of stressing about a full-day event.
Plus, shorter parties also tend to cost less and require fewer supplies, which is always a win-win… woot woot!
