Why does back-to-school season always feel like a circus? Of course, with nine kids between us, I guess it’s obvious. With our kids there’s always so much snack bartering, lunchbox trading, and mysterious squished items at the bottom of backpacks. But, over the years, we’ve learned what actually holds up, what kids truly use, and what saves us from mid-morning “I forgot my lunch” meltdowns.

These lunch time favorites are the products we come back to every school year because they actually work and they’re definitely affordable. Plus, because we found them on Amazon, they show up fast and make that lunchbox packing routine just a little less chaotic.

Kid-Approved Style and Storage

Half of the fun of back-to-school lunch is the items you store it in. Grabbing a fun lunch box for your kids will make lunchtime feel even more fun. You want to pick one that has enough room and insulation in order to keep food fresh, which is why we love the stackable containers that seal up airtight. Not only does this avoid spills, but the freshness factor stays high.

Time-Saving Tools for Packing

When we’re packing lunches 5-days a week for multiple kids, the goal is always to save time and make it fun for our kids when they open their lunchbox. We love a good fruit and veggie cutter to make fun shapes with the items they might not want to eat otherwise. Grabbing bento box type containers is helpful too for picky eaters who don’t want their food to touch. Many of these have built-in utensils too which means fewer parts to lose. And, we never forget a good ice pack to help keep their lunch cold during the morning before lunchtime.

Reduce Waste and Fun Extras

It’s funny, you don’t really realize how much money you waste on ziploc type bags until you’re using them for multiple kids 5 days a week. That’s why we switched to reusable food storage bags. They save us so much money and are much easier to clean then you’d think. When we can though, we always opt for items that are dishwasher safe. We’ve taught our kids how to put everything back once they’re done with lunch too so things don’t get chaotic and lost.

Another one of our favorite fun extras is to seal the edges of their sandwiches. Not only does this keep their PB&J or ham & cheese fresher, it makes their sandwich that much cuter and more special.
