Creating a playroom your kids love and one that doesn’t make you want to shut the door and walk away can be a bit of a challenge. Between our two families and nine kids, we’ve tested just about every toy bin, art wall idea, and cozy reading corner you can think of. We wanted a space that felt creative and fun for the kids, but still blended with the style of the rest of the home. It had to be functional, not overwhelming, and easy to tidy up without a meltdown every time. The result? A few core principles and a short list of favorites that make setting up a dream playroom way more manageable than it sounds.

Let’s get to it!

Small Updates Make a Big Impact

It can be daunting trying to create the playroom you dream of, but our first tip is to start small. Break your room up into zones, like a reading nook area, art area, etc. Then, tackle various zones little by little over time. to make this as easy and simple as possible, we love adding simple things like removable wall art and/or a playful rug.

Instead of going for bulky furniture, try smaller, kid-friendly pieces that save you space and the little ones could use easily. It’s important to keep a cohesive color palette with the rest of your home too so it doesn’t look out of place. If color confuses you, our friend Christin over at My Homier Home has a wonderful system for decorating with confidence.

Zones Are Your Secret Weapon

Like we mentioned above, creating mini stations, or zones, for different kinds of play activities is helpful to make the most of your playroom space. We find our kids like to have an art station, reading corner, and a place to play pretend with either their dress up clothes or their big toys. We like to keep each station stocked with just a few curated items to avoid overloading our kids with toys. We do this by swapping out bins of toys every couple of months to keep it fresh.

Choose Storage That Works for Everyone

When you’re thinking about your playroom setup, consider everything has to be easy enough for kids to access without needing your help. This not only helps support their independence, but gives them a chance to explore. Depending on the age of your kids, we tend to avoid bins with lids because our kids almost never actually put the lid back on, so they end strewn about.

When it comes to your storage, it’s best to stick to neutral and/or natural materials so as your kids grow, they don’t outgrow the design. We also like to label our baskets with words and pictures so the younger kids know where everything goes as well. It makes clean up much easier.

Keep Seating Flexible and Cozy

As we all know, kids love to climb, lay on the floor, and create forts, so having a ton of large pillows and kid-sized chairs and poufs will help them get cozy. We also keep a small table for crafts and snacks in our playroom as well. No matter what, always remember to purchase things that are machine-washable or wipe down easily. Durability is key. And look for some good floor seating for yourself to make playing with your kids comfortable for you too.

Don’t Forget to Personalize It

As with any room of your home, you want to make sure it feels like you. We like to keep the overall aesthetic in the playroom consistent with the rest of our home, but we also don’t want it to be too stuffy that it can’t be kid-friendly. That’s why we love hanging our kid’s art on a wire hanging system and including family photos throughout the room. You could even let your kids choose some decor that they love too.

No matter what you choose or how you decorate it, just remember this is your home and your kids should love living there too.
